Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill refers to equipment used to grind ceramic waste into powder. Common types include Raymond Mill, Vertical Roller Mill and Ultra-fine Grinding Mill. Before feeding raw materials into the mill, procedures such as manual sorting, vibrating screen screening and iron removal by iron removers are required. It is recommended to install iron removers in three stages on the production line.
What is Ceramic Waste?
Ceramic waste (also known as ceramic slag or waste ceramic powder) is solid waste generated during ceramic manufacturing. Its main chemical components are silicon dioxide and aluminum oxide. It has hardness close to natural ceramic minerals such as kaolin and feldspar, with Mohs hardness of grade 6 to 7. It features stable chemical properties, excellent high-temperature resistance, wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Driven by carbon peaking, carbon neutrality and solid waste resource utilization trends, ceramic waste has changed from an environmental burden to value-added recycled resources. As key processing equipment, Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill can process it into recycled ceramic powder of different fineness to achieve a win-win situation of environmental protection and economic benefits.
Precautions for Ceramic Waste Grinding Production Line
Impurity Treatment: Ceramic waste is often mixed with impurities such as iron nails, stainless steel grinding media, refractory bricks and plastics. In particular, metal impurities will severely wear core components including grinding rollers and grinding rings of the grinding mill. Manual sorting, vibrating screen screening and iron removal by iron removers shall be completed before feeding. Crushers, grinding mills and screening equipment shall be equipped with current overload protection to prevent equipment damage caused by jamming of hard materials.
Moisture Control: If the ceramic waste contains waste mud, wet green bodies or water-washed scraps, drying equipment shall be equipped. Excessive moisture content will cause material wall adhesion and blockage during grinding, reduce grinding efficiency and even trigger equipment failure.
Multi-stage Crushing: Grinding mills have strict requirements on feed particle size (generally ≤30~50mm). Ceramic waste has relatively high hardness, so Jaw Crusher is adopted for primary crushing, and Cone Crusher or Hammer Crusher for medium and fine crushing, to ensure the feed particle size meets requirements and guarantee stable operation of the grinding mill.
Safety Specifications: Ceramic waste itself carries no explosion risk, but plastic, woven bags, oil contaminants and unknown industrial waste must be strictly kept out. Screening and impurity removal must be completed before feeding, and flammable and explosive materials are strictly prohibited from entering the mill.
How to Select a Suitable Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill?
Raymond Mill

For ceramic waste grinding, Raymond Mill features low investment threshold, small footprint and simple maintenance. When handling high-hardness ceramic waste, wear parts shall be upgraded to materials such as high chromium cast iron. It applies to small and medium-scale production with fineness of 80 to 400 mesh, such as internal solid waste recycling in ceramic factories (recycled bricks, antique tiles), cement admixtures and building material fillers.
Vertical Roller Mill

When processing ceramic waste, Vertical Roller Mill delivers high grinding efficiency. Its power consumption per ton is 20~30% lower than that of Ball Mill. It integrates crushing, drying, grinding and classification and can run continuously and stably for 24 hours. It is suitable for large-scale scenarios including centralized solid waste treatment in ceramic industrial parks, bulk powder supply for building materials industry and metallurgical solid waste resource utilization. Although the initial investment is relatively high, it has low operating energy consumption. The extra investment can be recovered through energy saving within 2 to 3 years.
Ultra-fine Grinding Mill

Ultra-fine Grinding Mill is mainly used to produce recycled ceramic powder of 400~2500 mesh. Ultra-fine Ring Roller Grinding Mill is generally selected for small and medium-scale powder production, while Ultra-fine Vertical Roller Mill is adopted for large-scale production. Both feature high classification precision and concentrated finished particle size distribution, suitable for high-end fields such as high-end chemical fillers, coatings, plastic modification, rubber products and functional powder. For deep processing of ceramic waste, it is recommended to equip a modifier machine to greatly increase the added value of recycled ceramic powder.
Technological Process of Ceramic Waste Grinding Production Line
The ceramic waste grinding production line usually adopts the process mode of impurity removal first, then crushing and finally grinding. Ceramic waste firstly goes through manual sorting, vibrating screen screening and multi-stage magnetic separation by iron removers to completely remove metals and sundries. Then large waste blocks are subjected to primary crushing by Jaw Crusher, and medium and fine crushing by Hammer Crusher or Cone Crusher to make feed particle size meet the mill feeding requirement. The crushed material is sent to the silo by elevator, and finally fed into the grinding mill by feeder for grinding and classification. Qualified recycled ceramic powder after classification enters the dust collection system composed of cyclone collector and pulse bag dust collector along with airflow for collection and purification, ensuring emission concentration ≤10mg/m³. The whole line adopts negative pressure sealed design. For high-end industry applications, a surface modifier machine can be equipped for deep processing to improve powder added value.
Application Scenarios of Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill

Frequently Asked Questions about Ceramic Waste Grinding
Are Grinding Rollers and Grinding Rings of Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill Frequently Replaced?
Ceramic waste has Mohs hardness of grade 6 to 7 and causes heavy loss to wear parts. Grinding rollers and grinding rings made of ordinary materials cannot work efficiently. Core grinding components are usually upgraded with high chromium alloy, wear-resistant ceramics and other materials. Alternatively, Vertical Roller Mill based on material layer grinding principle can be selected. Its grinding rollers do not contact the grinding disc directly with low wear rate. Under normal working conditions, the replacement cycle of Raymond Mill grinding rollers is about 6~12 months. The roller sleeves of Vertical Roller Mill can be flipped for longer service life.
What to Do If the Powder Color from Ceramic Waste Grinding Mill is Uneven?
Ceramic waste has complex composition, and color varies between batches. Multi-stage iron removal process can be adopted before feeding raw materials to remove iron impurities and prevent recycled ceramic powder from blackening. Besides, it is recommended to mix waste from different batches before grinding to reduce composition fluctuation. For extremely high whiteness requirements (such as reuse for ceramic green bodies), magnetic iron removal can be repeated to guarantee the whiteness of finished powder.
How to Configure Iron Removers for Ceramic Waste Grinding Production Line?
Ceramic waste grinding production line is usually equipped with multiple iron removers. Three-stage arrangement is recommended: the first stage before crushing to remove large iron pieces and protect the crusher; the second stage before feeding into mill to remove fine iron scraps and protect the grinding mill; the third stage after finished powder collection to improve the purity of recycled ceramic powder.
Which Grinding Mill is Suitable for High-hardness Alumina Ceramic Waste?
Alumina ceramic waste has Mohs hardness up to grade 9. Raymond Mill is not recommended, because its wear parts wear extremely fast and maintenance cost is too high. Dry grinding process is generally not adopted. If dry grinding is required, wear-reinforced Vertical Roller Mill or ceramic ball mill with full alumina lining and grinding balls can be selected for processing.
