Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide Introduction

Industrial grade calcium oxide (commonly known as quicklime, chemical formula CaO) is calcium oxide powder produced from natural limestone through high-temperature calcination, crushing, grinding and classification. It features high powder activity and strong water absorption, releasing intense heat when contacting water. Widely applied in metallurgical slagging, flue gas desulfurization, wastewater treatment, aerated concrete production and chemical synthesis.

Powder Properties of Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide

Chemical Properties: Calcium oxide (CaO) content ≥90%, high activity (≥300ml). It has strong alkalinity and hygroscopicity, reacts violently with water to form calcium hydroxide and releases massive heat.

Physical Properties: Fineness 80~400 mesh, bulk density 0.8~1.2g/cm³, in powder or lump form with good flowability.

Appearance & Color: Usually pure white or slightly grayish white, uniform quality without visible impurities.

Moisture Content: Free moisture ≤0.5%. The powder must be packed in tight seal to prevent moisture-induced deactivation.

Production Process of Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide

Industrial grade calcium oxide is manufactured by high-temperature calcination. After pretreatment including crushing, screening and washing, limestone raw material is fed into vertical kiln or rotary kiln for high-temperature calcination (1000~1200℃), decomposing calcium carbonate into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. Rotary kiln is recommended for premium calcium oxide powder. The calcined quicklime is cooled down by cooling system, crushed via jaw crusher, then ground and classified by Raymond mill to obtain calcium oxide powder of different fineness grades.

Application Fields of Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide

Metallurgy Industry: Used as steelmaking slag former for desulfurization, dephosphorization and desiliconization in steel smelting, improving molten steel purity and reducing smelting cost.

Environmental Protection: Applied for flue gas desulfurization, sewage treatment, acidic wastewater neutralization and sludge dewatering, featuring high neutralization efficiency and low cost.

Building Materials: Used to produce aerated concrete blocks, autoclaved bricks, lime mortar and stabilized soil to enhance material strength and durability.

Chemical Industry: Serves as basic chemical raw material for producing calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, propylene oxide and pharmaceutical intermediates.

Agriculture: Used for acidic soil improvement, pesticide carrier preparation and feed additives to adjust soil pH value and supplement calcium elements.

Frequently Asked Questions of Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide

What is the difference between industrial grade calcium oxide and industrial grade calcium hydroxide?

Industrial Grade Calcium Oxide: Processed from limestone, featuring high powder activity and strong water absorption. Suitable for metallurgy, flue gas desulfurization, sewage treatment, building materials and other industries.

Industrial Grade Calcium Hydroxide: Made from calcium oxide, with mild powder property and low hygroscopicity. Applied in acidic wastewater neutralization, bleaching powder preparation, food additives, coatings and other fields.

What should be noted for storage of industrial grade calcium oxide?

Industrial grade calcium oxide is chemically active. It readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, leading to deliquescence, heat release and performance failure. It must be stored in cool, dry, ventilated and sealed warehouse, away from water sources and acidic substances. Moisture-proof sealed packaging is recommended.

What is the difference between ordinary industrial calcium oxide and high-activity calcium oxide?

Ordinary Industrial Calcium Oxide: Calcium oxide content normally 85%~90%, activity 200~300ml, calcined in conventional vertical kiln. Suitable for general industrial filling, neutralization and building material applications.

High-Activity Calcium Oxide: CaO content ≥92%, activity ≥360ml, high-temperature calcined by rotary kiln. It has fine grains and high porosity with extremely fast reaction speed, for fine chemical, high-end metallurgy and advanced environmental treatment.
